One of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica, Monteverde is in the cloud forest and has two major cloud forest reserves and numerous other forest parks.

There are bird-watching tours where some of the rarest birds in the world can be found, including the resplendent Quetzal and many of the breeds of Tucans.

Monteverde is well known for the range of birds and touts the widest variety of Hummingbirds in the world. There are night tours, where the nocturnal life of the forest comes alive.

The beauty of nature becomes thrilling adventures on cable rides and rope bridges through the forest canopy in several locations. Numerous hiking trails weave through parks and wilderness. Vegetation is beautiful and plentiful. Hike peacefully by yourself through these trails, discovering beautiful waterfalls, bountiful vegetation and rare birds and animals or take a guide through the forest reserves and learn about the area.

Because Monteverde is such a tourist destination, there are restaurants, serving from local typical meals to exquisite dining. There are numerous shops, yoga studios and live entertainment. The night life includes dancing and clubs. Three grocery stores serve the area, including local goods.

But the biggest draw is the warm welcoming people of Monteverde who become fast friends and bring you into the Tico culture. There is a small but active group of foreign residents from all over the world. Although speaking Spanish is always welcome, many of the locals speak English. No need to bring Colones – dollars are accepted everywhere.
